Lorie is an employment lawyer that has served as in-house counsel and external advisor to a variety of companies crossing multiple industries and multiple locations. In addition, she has led human resources departments. She began her career in Silicon Valley, California and moved to Arizona in 2006. She has recently established her own HR and employment law consulting firm, HR Law Works, LLC.
During her career, Lorie has provided counsel as part of the executive management team. She has dealt with many facets of HR and employment law including internal investigations, Department of Labor investigations, civil rights charges, mergers and acquisitions, compensation plans, wage and hour issues, leaves of absence, and hiring and termination processes.
Lorie obtained a B.A. in International Relations from the University of San Diego and her law degree from McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific.
She has been an active member of SHRM of Greater Phoenix since January 2011. She has served in a variety of capacities and is currently the Past-President.
She is currently licensed to practice law in Arizona, California, and Texas.

During this session, we will discuss the pro’s and con’s of having an employee handbook. In addition, we will go over what policies every organization should have. Finally, we will go over some traps for the unwary. Participants will leave with best practices they can implement in their organizations.
There have been a lot of challenges for employers in the last year with respect to wage and hour. There were the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) salary exemption updates that were put on hold and a higher minimum wage in Arizona. With all of this, organizations cannot forget to review their wage and hour practices to ensure compliance.
