Mr. John Prothro began his teaching career in the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1985 at Menlo Avenue Elementary School. After seven years in Los Angeles, I matriculated to San Jose, California, to start instruction at Franklin Elementary School. Next, I accepted a teaching job in Chandler, Arizona. In the Grand Canyon State, I have taught elementary, junior high and high school.
I am recognized as a three-tier teacher, having taught elementary, junior high and currently high school believing that all students can learn, enjoy structure, and combined with teacher enthusiasm, want to learn.
Presently I am in my tenth year at Perry High School where I teach AP World History and serve as the Public Address Announcer for Perry Puma Sports. Four years ago, the Social Studies Department named the Social Studies Honor Society, Rho Kappa, in my name. The John Prothro Rho Kappa Honor Society will exist at Perry High School in perpetuity.
Before the Public Address Announcing, I served as the Narrator on the Emmy Award winning documentary series History of Chandler Schools. The 3-part series won five Emmy Awards.
I also publicly speaks throughout the Phoenix area on issues of diversity and African American History, specifically the Civil Rights Movement. In January of 2024, I was the keynote speaker for the City of Chandler’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Ceremony.
I attended Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, CA before attending UCLA. I am married (Roxane) with three children, Alyssa 26, John III 24 and Stephen 21.

In this lively, energy filled presentation, listeners will understand how the adaptable Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. navigated his way through the Civil Rights Era (1954 - 1968). We will examine Dr. King as a reformer, a redeemer and ultimately as a revolutionary. Listeners’ knowledge will be enhanced and increased through little known facts about Dr. King and becoming cognizant of how his role changed throughout this eclectic time period.
Before Mrs. Rosa Parks' Montgomery, Alabama arrest, lynchings, assassinations and legislative tactics set the scene for America's Civil Rights Era. Why were 4 Mississippi murders by known assailants that occurred the same year her arrest not well known? A 1957 Constitutional Crisis rocked the nation centering around the school segregation issue. Sit-ins, demonstrations, marches and sacrifices created headlines that have left indelible marks on American History. This talk chronicles the major events of the Civil Rights Era (1954 - 1968).
